Sheik Zayed Road (named after the emir who created the emirate) is at the heart of the business district, with the Dubai World Centre, the Emirates Towers and the Dubaï International Financial Centre. A line of skyscrapers towers on either side of this interminable 10-lane highway like a proud hedge. They are the symbol for unbridled development and the emirate’s international and cosmopolitan stature. The district spreads southwards towards Abu Dhabi (140 km away), at the frantic rate of one new building per month! On the left, the Emirate Towers (305 and 355 meters) are currently the highest skyscrapers in Europe and the Middle East combined.
