June 2006. Off-shore building site for “Palm Jumeirah”. With its 3840 km2, Dubai has only a short coast. For this reason, in 2001 this little emirate began the tremendous project of increasing its coastline by building the world’s biggest artificial islands. Unique in its category, “Palm Jumeirah” is a tourist complex on the ocean in the shape of a trunk with 17 palm leaves surrounded by an 11-km-long dyke. 60 kilometres of beach were created by relocating over 100 million m3 of sand and rocks to this 5km-diameter complex. Potentially finished at the end of 2006, “Palm Jumeirah” will house several dozens of hotels, thousands of private houses and apartments as well as marinas, restaurants, water parks, shopping malls, sports fields, mineral springs, cinemas, etc. A 300-meter bridge will join the “trunk” to the continent. A monorail will lead to the “Atlantis Resort”, at the heart of the complex, made up of a hotel with over 1000 rooms and an aquatic park.
