South Atlantic Ocean - United Kingdom - Saint Helena Island : The only anchorage and town on the island, Jamestown is built around a main street in the hollow of a narrow valley. Space within the city being limited, the city developed in Half Tree Hollow, a sort of suburb located at the top of a huge staircase, called Jacob's Ladder. The staircase, built in 1829 and rebuilt in 1871, has 699 steps for a length of 280 meters and a vertical drop of 183 meters, i.e. a climb angle of over 45 degrees.
