The true palestra of Olympia’s sanctuary was built in the 4th century B.C for athletes’ training. In this square courtyard with peristyle, athletes trained for wrestling, fighting, racing, jumping and discus throwing to the flute player’s music. Because the palestra was always very crowded, philosophers, orators, and politicians came here frequently to be heard and exercise their influence. A replica of Olympia’s palestra was built, under the expertise of French historian-archaeologist Philippe de Carbonnières so that our athletes could train under similar conditions to those of their ancestors.
