The chariot race competition was held in a racecourse outside Olympia’s sanctuary and stadium. Whereas athletes competed naked, the charioteers were dressed in white tunics. Only the owners of the horses were proclaimed winners. As in the hoplites armed race, the leading chariot around the bend was usually the winner of the competition.
