Without a doubt two of the most famous sculptures of Greek Classical art.
-Artist Praxitel’s Paros marble Hermes, 2.13 meters tall, was made around 340 B.C and was found in the temple of Hera in Olympia. Thanks to a stroke of luck, not only is the god’s slender body in excellent condition, but so are his dreaming face, opulent hair and the delicate contours of his forehead and cheeks (left).
-The famous statue of victory by Paionios, 2.12 meters tall (424 B.C) by the artist of the same name, was raised on a rectangular pedestal of about 9 meters high in front of the eastern facade of Zeus’ temple. The goddess, open-winged, is shown coming down from the sky to crown the winners of the Olympic Games. This masterpiece of Classical Greek sculpture constitutes a technical prowess: this was the first time that wings had been rendered with such realism (right).
