Discovered at a site in the South of France and currently conserved in the Angoulême museum, this helmet is built from an iron hull and adorned with a bronze plating, which was then completely covered with gold and incrusted with coral. As a ritual object this helmet was doubtfully ever worn, but provides a fantastic example of the talents of Celtic goldsmiths. José Gomez de Soto, director of the CNRS research labs associated to the Angoulême museum, demonstrates how the cheek guards would have been worn, providing the wearer with lateral protection. Today’s scientists have not found what high-ranking character was worthy of such a luxury.
