Abeid Mahmoud, from the IFAO restauration lab (far left) cleans and restores the figures of the painted façade. Made from natural pigments, the original colors were applied to a high-quality limestone of Toura, which explains their nearly pristine condition. To seal the colors, the restorer uses chemicals which protect the colors from the three ‘plagues’ of deterioration: light, humidity and oxygen. In the foreground, Khaled Zaza, IFAO’s illustrator, copies the drawings before him. At this level of detail, even photography cannot replace the precision of a trace. After they are verified by Vassil Dobrev, the drawings will be scanned and prepared for publishing.
