Vassil Dobrev, here in front of the Step Pyramid of Djoser, is an archaeologist-Egyptologist with the French Archaeological Institute (IFAO) in Cairo, founded in 1880. Born July 30, 1961 in Bulgaria, Dobrev is of French nationality and currently resides in Cairo. He earned a Ph.D in Ancient History (Egyptology) in 1992 from the University of Paris, Sorbonne with a thesis entitled: “Research on the Kings of the VIth Egyptian Dynasty.” He worked with the French Archeological Mission of Saqqara from 1987 to 2001 and is specialized in the inscriptions left by the pyramid builders. As a member of the IFAO he worked on the excavation mission at Balat in the Dakhla oasis. He is also responsible for the IFAO South Saqqara archeological cartography project.
