Located in Decabrist Square, this equestrian statue by French sculptor
Etienne Falconet portrays Peter the Great (1682-1725) stepping on the snake
of betrayal. It illustrates the voluntary and uncompromising spirit of the
city's founder. Known throughout all of Russia by the name of "the Bronze
Horseman", it inspired Alexandre Pushkin's famous eponymous poem. Ordered by
Catherine II, it bears the simple inscription in Russian and Latin: "to Peter
II, Catherine II".
