Peterhof Estate: the Orangery. In 1705, Peter the Great had a little
summer residence built across from the Gulf of Finland. But after his
victory over the Swedish in 1709 and his visit to Versailles, he decided to
have a palace built " for the greatest of the monarchs". Under the direction
of French architect Le Blond for the exterior and of Rastrelli for the
interior, over 5000 workers, serfs and soldiers directed by architects,
hydraulic specialists, landscape gardeners began the building site in 1714.
The "Russian Versailles" was inaugurated on August 15th, 1723.
