Peterhof Estate: southern wall of the Grand Palace. In 1705, Peter the
Great had a little summer residence built across from the Gulf of Finland.
But after his victory over the Swedish in 1709 and his visit to Versailles,
he decided to have a palace built " for the greatest of the monarchs". Under
the direction of French architect Jean Baptiste Le Blond for the exterior and
of Rastrelli for the interior, over 5000 workers, serfs and soldiers directed
by architects, hydraulics specialists, and landscape gardeners began the
building site in 1714. The "Russian Versailles" was inaugurated on August
15th, 1723.
