The flame of the unknown soldier, on the military esplanade evokes the
numerous difficult periods that the city has undergone during its three
centuries of existence. Especially the nine hundred days of siege during the
Second World War when two million people died. The city was then called "the
city of heroes". In the background, the Troïtski Bridge(Trinity Bridge),
built in 1897 by two French engineers (Vincent Chabrol and Claude
Patouillard), in response to the construction of the Alexandre III Bridge in
Paris.
