Battle of Hartmanswillerkopf (Hill of the Old Armand): Trenches on the German side during the war. Strategic position overlooking the plain of Alsace, east of the Vosges, about 300,000 men fought here to win (for French) or defend (for German) Alsace region. Approximately 50,000 people are dead or missing and 12,000 French soldiers are buried unknown in the crypt of the National Monument (pictures 239 and 240).
