Position stratégique dominant la plaine d'Alsace, à l'est des Vosges, environ 300000 hommes se sont battus ici pour reconquérir (pour les français) ou défendre (pour les allemand) l'Alsace. Environ 50000 hommes y sont morts ou disparus et 12000 soldats inconnus français reposent dans la crypte du monument national (photos 239 et 240).
