Battle of Hartmanswillerkopf (Hill of the Old Armand) : The crest where was located the front line just after the Great War. This strategic position, overlooking the south of the plain of Alsace (east of the Vosges remained French), about 300,000 men fought here to win (for French) or defend (for German) Alsace. Approximately 50,000 people are dead or missing and 12,000 French soldiers are buried unknown in the crypt of the National Monument (pictures 239 and 240).
