Battle of Hartmanswillerkopf (Hill of the Old Armand) : National Monument (one of the four with those of Notre Dame de Lorette, Dormans and Douaumont). It houses a National Cemetery (1264 graves identified), and six ossuaries (12,000 unknown soldiers). Right, the National Cemetery. In the background, the Grand Ballon and the crest of the Vosges. Strategic position overlooking the plain of Alsace, about 300,000 men fought here to win (for French) or defend (for German) Alsace. About 50,000 men were killed in action or missing.
