Battle of Hartmanswillerkopf (Hill of the Old Armand): General aerial view of the site. At the top of the hill, the ridge where was situated the front line. In the foreground, the National Cemetery (one of the four with those of Notre Dame de Lorette, Dormans and Douaumont). On the background, the plain of Alsace, at the time German. From this strategic position overlooking the south of the plain of Alsace (east of the Vosges remained French), about 300,000 men fought here to win (for French) or defend (for German) Alsace region. Approximately 50,000 people are dead or missing and 12,000 French soldiers are buried unknown in the crypt of the National Monument (pictures 239 and 240).
