Battle of Verdun : The Underground Citadel of Verdun. This is where the Unknown Soldier was chosen, based on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris since 11 November 1920. This network of 4 km, dug to 16 meters depth between 1890 and 1893, was a key logistics center of the Battle of Verdun (barracks, headquarters, ammunition depots and food, central communications, nursing, etc.), occupied by nearly 4,000 men. Its 9 ovens were producing 41,000 rations per day. The site is now a memorial museum.
