Battle of Verdun : Monument of the Trench of Bayonets. Between 10 and 12 June 1916 took place here a terrible bombardment (including heavy guns 280 mm, see pictures 191-193). The legend says that the rifles emerging from the ground marked where 21 soldiers were buried alive in their trenches, and named the place "Trench of Bayonets." Very impressed with these images, an American banker named George T. Rand donated 500,000 francs for the construction of the memorial, which still houses the site. The monument was built by the architect André Ventre in 1920.
