Battle of Verdun : Site of the destroyed village of Fleury devant Douaumont. Aerial view of the old town with, in the center from bottom to top, the remains of the main street. The locations of the houses have been materialized by milestones reminding trades and activities of the former village community. In spring 1916, this strategic town for both sides is captured and recaptured 16 times by French and German soldiers, reflecting the intensity of the fighting. Bottom right, on the site of the old church, the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Europe. Included in the "Red Zone" after the war, the village has never been rebuilt.
