Battle of Verdun : In the Fort of Vaux, a 75mm cannon which defended the western flank, and has been retained as it stood. In this fort, which was an important place of French resistance to the German assaults, the garrison commander Raynal fought one week to the extreme limit of his strength before having to surrend. At their surrender, the French soldiers received military honors by German, June 7, 1916.
