Fighting in Argonne: Butte de Montfaucon, Montfaucon American tower. Located at the foot of the ruins of the destroyed village of Montfaucon en Argonne, this granite tower of 58 meters shaped as Doric column is topped by a statue of "Genius Liberator" of 7 feet tall. It commemorates the victory of the First U.S. Army. The village of Montfaucon was the highlight of the region and a major German observatories and was recaptured by U.S. troops under General Pershing at the decisive Meuse-Argonne offensive in September 1918.
