Fighting in Argonne: Butte of Montfaucon: Remains of the church and the village of Montfaucon. The village, which was the second highest point in the region (after the Butte of Vauquois) and one of Germany's leading observatories, was recaptured by U.S. troops under General Pershing at the decisive Meuse-Argonne offensive in September 1918. Completely destroyed, the village has been rebuilt 300 meters away, at the foot of the hill.
