Fighting in Argonne: Butte of Vauquois: One of the underground rooms reserved for French officers. The two camps each dug an underground city with its various assignments in different areas: health barracks, depots, power plant and compressed air, command post and communication, etc.. Each side trying to infiltrate and destroy the enemy by digging tunnels under the galleries of the opposite camp. In the craters of the hill, about 17 km from wells, tunnels and branches, appointed by the French and German troops to house veterans and feed mine warfare, which reached its climax here: 519 explosions (199 German and 320 French ) there were identified.
