Battles of Champagne: The Hand of Massiges, aerial view. From autumn 1914, the German retreat to this natural height, located at the junction of fronts of Champagne and Argonne. Its shape resembles as a hand, each "finger" being a bastion of this natural defense. On the extreme right, the remains of trenches, where the bodies of French and German soldiers continue to be discovered every year (the last date of May 2013, see photo 114). Countless galleries and trenches were dug by both sides. The fields of the Hand of Massiges remained in the state, with its funnels mines and trenches of fighting in 1914 and 1915, restored in recent years by a small local association.
