Battles of the Marne : Victory Monument of the Marne at Mondement. In the shape of a gigantic milestone of 35.5 meters high, the monument commemorates the first battle of the Marne (September 1914). At the base of the monument, a bas-relief representing the effigies of the generals commanding armies in battle. Above, carved in stone, the order of 6 September 1914, signed by french General Joffre : "For the armies. At the time to initiate a battle that can be decisive that the fate of the country depends, it is important to remember to all that the time is not to look back. Every effort should be made to attack and suppress the enemy. In the current circumstances, any failure can not be tolerated. A company can not move forward should, whatever the cost, keep the conquered territory and be killed rather than retreat. Under the current circumstances, any failure can not be tolerated." This is Joffre himself who chooses, after the war, the location and the artist who built this monument.
