Battles of Artois : Lichfield Crater, a mine crater turned into a military cemetery. On April 9, 1917 during the Canadian offensive at Vimy Ridge (Photos 011-018), the officer in charge of burials takes advantage of two mine craters at the foot of the ridge to bury a hundred soldiers who fell during the fighting. Today grassed, Lichfield Crater (with Zivy Crater, located nearby) retains the original shape in which there is no equivalent among the Commonwealth war cemeteries. In the background, the A26 motorway, from Calais to Arras.
