Battle of Artois: Vimy Ridge, Canadian National Historic Site. With significant work done by the Canadian Engineers during the winter of 1916-1917, the underground galleries of the western bank (originally dug by the Huguenots to escape religious persecution) enabled thousands of Canadian soldiers to prepare the assault of 9 April 1917 without the knowledge of the German army. That day, the troops with the maple leaf, met for the first time in a non British single corps wins Vimy Ridge, marking a major chapter in the history of the Canadian nation. The Vimy ridge is forested today : Each tree was planted by a Canadian and symbolizes the sacrifice of a soldier.
