Meroitic language, "the Etruscan Africa" remains to be elucidated and remains a key challenge for the decryption of lost civilizations. It is from the second century BC which appears to Meroe a specific writing, resulting in the abandonment of Egyptian hieroglyphics in favor of including 23 new alphabetic signs, near the Egyptian cursive writing (use) and Egyptian hieroglyphics (use royal cult). We can therefore read the texts, but we do not yet understand.
This limestone stela is one of the most impressive discoveries at Meroe. At the top, there are a double scene of royal personages. The remaining space is occupied by a cursive script, which is one of the longest known Meroitic texts, and still undeciphered apart from the recognizable names of the Queen and Prince Amaniremas Akinidad. It could be a commemoration of the victory of the army of Meroe on the Roman provinces around the first cataract (Aswan) around 24 AD.
