White Memorial Cross. While the south bank of the river (Spree) was on the territory of West Berlin, the river belonged to East Berlin. The memorial of the "White Cross", by the private association Berliner Bürger-Verein, was introduced at the junction between the old exterior wall and the bank of the Spree and was temporarily displaced during the construction period of development of the Reichstag and Bundestag (the eastern part is visible in the background). Since June 17, 2003, this memorial site is located on the south bank of the Spree and includes a total of seven crosses. It is dedicated to all victims of the wall, who died in their attempts to escape to the west after the closure of the border. The crosses are oriented towards the bank bear the dates of death of victims following: "Günter Litfin, 24.8.1961; Ingo Krüger, 10.12.1961; Räwel Hans, 01.01.1963; Klaus Schröter, 11/04/1963; Heinz Sokolowski, 25.11 .1965; Marinetta Jirkowsky, 22.11.1980. "The Spree believe oriented tribute to victims following: "Udo Düllick, 05/10/1961; Werner Probst, 10/14/1961; Philipp Held, 11.4.1962; Axel Hannemann, 05/06/1962; Lutz Haberland, 27.5.1962; Wolf-Olaf Muszinski, March 1963; Chris Gueffroy, 05/02/1989. "This memorial is dedicated to "all the unknown victims of the wall." The choice of victims, which honors this place, has historical reasons. The white crosses were planted at each location where a fugitive, who had tried to reach West Berlin, was shot by border guards of the GDR. Over the years, it was decided to centralize them in two places, one hand around the bank of the Spree and the other in the Bernauer Strasse (see # 16).
