In the House of Ephebe, a series of scenes on the banks of the Nile were discovered, evoking the fertility of this fabulous site. Here a couple is making love, the woman straddling the man to the sound of the flute, encouraged by assistants who are surely a little drunk after a banquet. This type of sex scene is commonly found on friezes which were meant to depict the exoticism of distant shores and the “obscene” mores of the African people.
