On the Via del Vesuvio, this little terra cotta phallus symbolizes the worship of fertility; one of the Romans’ main preoccupations. Many similar artefacts made of terra cotta or sculpted in stone, can be seen on the walls and streets of Pompeii. Romans worshiped Priapus, god of fertility, and believed that those who adored him would be granted virility.
