On the via di Nola, this curious stucco altar, with a raised phallus in a little sanctuary, symbolizes the worship of fertility; one of the Romans’ main preoccupations. The phallus is winged, as suggested by the traces of white paint in the background. Many similar artefacts made of terra cotta or sculpted in stone, can be seen on the walls and streets of Pompeii.
