The painters climbers of the Eiffel Tower at mid-height

The Eiffel Tower is getting a makeover to mark its 120 anniversary. For the makeup, an international team (France, United Kingdom, Portugal, Romania, Morocco and Greece) 26 painters climbers who began the 19th year restoration of the monument, planned from April 2009 to October 2010. Seven years after the previous season, rain, wind, heat, frost, bird droppings and pollution have seriously damaged the structure in wrought iron (low carbon) and caused many points of vulnerability (rust, bare structure, etc.). The operation is divided in several steps: 1/ detection, diagnosis, scraping and sanding of weak points, 2/ laying a layer of rust red, 3/ laying a layer of protective paint gray, 4/ apply a coat of brown paint, patented and exclusive to the Eiffel Tower. A total of surface is 250,000 square meters (the equivalent of 45 football fields) and it will need 70 tons of paint (about 3,500 gallons of 20 liters) to overcome. To accentuate the slender aspect of the work, the painting is darker at the base and lighter at the top. Finally, the monument is not closed to the public during the construction period, two hectares of nets have been installed to keep falling down tools. Among these painters-climbers, Elodie Partucci, young french woman of 26 who did not faint of heart (photos 71 to 90). Thanks to the SETE (Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel), the Prefecture of Police in Paris and Resolute, without whom this story would not have been possible.
